JESUS IS THE CENTER OF INTERCESSION
True intercession leads every individual into the presence of Christ
BASE TEXTS Matthew 6:5-6 · 1 Timothy 2:5 · Hebrews 4:14-16
CENTRAL TRUTH Biblical intercession does not create dependence on the intercessor; it directs individuals to rely on Jesus.
Introduction
The act of praying for others is deeply rooted in biblical tradition. Interceding for the sick, for families, for those who are distanced, and for those who are suffering constitutes a fundamental mission of the Church.
Scripture is replete with examples of individuals who engaged in intercession. Figures such as Abraham, Moses, Samuel, and the early Church exemplified this practice. Therefore, the issue does not lie in praying for others, nor in doing so through a live broadcast.
The challenge arises when individuals develop a habitual dependence on the intercessor rather than cultivating a direct relationship with God.
Wholesome intercession asserts, "I will pray alongside you, but I also wish to guide you in approaching God's presence."
The true minister does not gather individuals around himself; rather, he guides them to the feet of Jesus.
1. Prayer should glorify God, not man
"But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret."
—Matthew 6:6
Jesus did not prohibit all forms of public prayer. He himself prayed in the presence of his disciples, and the early Church also engaged in collective prayer. The admonition was against transforming prayer into a spectacle, thereby using something sacred to garner human attention, recognition, or approval.
Public prayer is permissible; however, it is imperative to cultivate a private life of prayer. The spiritual authority that manifests before others must originate from a place of solitude and intimacy with God.
Before the platform, there must be the altar. Before the public space, there must be the closed room. Before the audience, there must be an intimate relationship with God.
Question for Reflection: If there were no camera, no commentary, no audience, and no platform, would we continue to dedicate the same hours to prayer?
This inquiry is not intended to condemn; rather, it serves to examine our motives. The minister must remain vigilant; prayer must be sincere; and the counselor must also stand at the feet of Jesus.
2. There is only one Mediator
"For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."
—1 Timothy 2:5
The intercessor is not the mediator. The pastor is not the mediator. The preacher is not the mediator. The individual directing a live prayer session is not the mediator.
Jesus Christ is the sole Mediator.
We may agree in prayer, share one another's burdens, offer counsel, and lay hands on the sick. However, no one requires our assistance to access God.
The blood of Jesus has opened a new and living way. For the sake of Christ, any repentant individual can approach the throne of grace. Our mission is not to usurp the role of Jesus, but to proclaim that the pathway is open through Him.
The true intercessor does not declare, "You are always in need of my presence." Instead, he invites, "Let us together enter into the presence of God, for Jesus has paved the way."
3. Intercession must yield spiritual maturity
"Until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."
—Ephesians 4:13
The objective of ministry is to foster spiritual maturity among individuals. While it is commendable to receive prayer requests, it is equally essential to instruct individuals in the art of prayer. It is vital to intercede for the afflicted, yet we must also empower individuals to stand firm in the Word.
We must not allow anyone to believe that God only hears them when a specific individual prays on their behalf. Biblical intercession fortifies individuals; it does not confine them.
It cultivates disciples, not mere admirers. It produces steadfast believers, not dependent followers. It creates individuals who recognize God's voice, wield the Word, and maintain a life dedicated to God.
"He must increase, but I must decrease."
—John 3:30
In a healthy ministry, Jesus is magnified in the eyes of the people while the minister diminishes.
4. We must discern between fruit and dependence
Jesus taught that we recognize a tree by its fruits. Thus, it is crucial to evaluate the outcomes of our endeavors:
Are individuals gaining a deeper grasp

Beyond the ordinary

It is imperative to recognize that not every individual who engages with the Bible is imparting the truth.

Some may commence with a particular verse, articulating their thoughts eloquently and appearing to convey the Gospel accurately. However, as they elaborate on their message, they may introduce personal interpretations, extract texts from their intended context, and ultimately distort the teachings of Christ.

The inherent danger resides in the fact that the most significant deception is not an outright falsehood, but rather a truth interspersed with error. When the Bible is given precedence, many individuals may lower their defenses and accept all subsequent assertions without scrutiny.

It is crucial not to evaluate a preacher based solely on their follower count, eloquence, published works, or emotional appeal. Instead, one must assess the message against the Word of God.

The Bereans, as recorded in Acts 17:11, listened attentively to Paul, yet they diligently examined the Scriptures on a daily basis to confirm the veracity of his teachings. If they undertook such scrutiny of even Paul’s instruction, it is all the more essential that we critically evaluate the content we encounter on social media.

One should not follow individuals blindly or elevate preachers above the Scriptures. It is essential to be well-versed in the Word, to analyze the context, and to seek divine discernment.

A message may reference Jesus while simultaneously presenting a skewed understanding of Him. It may cite the Bible and arrive at conclusions that the text does not support.

The truth does not necessitate reinvention. The Gospel of Jesus Christ must be proclaimed with fidelity.
